Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Practical Buying Guide

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds. The main difference is their origin: lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technology rather than extracted from the earth.

When choosing a lab-grown diamond, start with cut quality. A well-cut diamond reflects light more effectively and can appear brighter and more attractive than a larger diamond with a weaker cut. For most buyers, cut should be one of the highest priorities.

Colour and clarity should be selected according to the jewellery design and your budget. In many settings, especially yellow or rose gold, a slightly lower colour grade may still look beautifully white. Similarly, small inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye can offer better value without affecting the appearance of the jewellery.

Certification is also important. Look for diamonds graded by recognised laboratories such as IGI or GIA. A grading report provides independent information about the diamond's carat weight, colour, clarity, cut and other characteristics.

Carat weight measures the diamond's weight, not necessarily its visual size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their proportions and cut.

The best diamond is not simply the one with the highest grades. The right choice is a balance of appearance, quality, certification, design and budget.
